In order to create this digital painterly style I used a mixture of 3D and 2D techniques.

I started with painting a sky and separating it into layers in order to create paralax.

I modeled a rough transmission tower based on several blueprint references and verified silhouette accuracy with a company that inspects transmission towers.

I created a lens flare rig using expressions in After Effects that allows the squares to be replaced by any image.

I combined a matte generated by 3D software with a specular pass to isolate the waves of specular reflection that hypnotized me on long drives as a kid.
